In the year 850 AE, Varis Duskcaller believed he had found a path to reshape the world. A cunning mage-thief of the Order of Shadow, he was brilliant, calculating, and absolutely convinced that the Balance of the Blade had strangled Vravana under a banner of rigid justice.

What began as a plan to disrupt their rule ended in a disaster that nearly unmade magic itself. The ritual he designed—complex, beautiful, reckless—did not break the world all at once. It cracked it open slowly, and then violently, leaving behind a wound that would never close. That wound came to be known as the Voidscar.

Why Varis Rebelled

The Order of Shadow had long resented the Balance of the Blade’s dominance over Vravana. The Balance’s strict code of justice and their fortified cities represented a stifling control that the Order viewed as an affront to their ideals of freedom and chaos. To gain an edge, a faction within the Order decided to take drastic action.

They uncovered a fragment of the Everglowing Ember deep in the Linwood—a shard pulsating with raw, chaotic energy. The Ember fragment’s power was unlike anything they had encountered, promising untold magical potential.

The Order saw an opportunity: if they could harness the fragment and channel its energy into the ley lines, they could destabilize the Balance’s enchanted fortresses and magical wards. Their enemy’s carefully constructed stability would crumble, giving the Order the upper hand.

Varis & The Voidkeeper

Varis Duskcaller, an ambitious mage-thief of the Order of Shadow, was a visionary—or so he believed. He saw the chaotic energy of the ley lines and the raw, otherworldly power of the Ember fragment as two sides of the same coin: forces that, if harnessed together, could create unparalleled magic.

Varis wanted to control that magic, to become a conduit for its immense power and, ultimately, to tip the scales of Vravana forever in favor of the Order.

His goal was audacious:

  • Forge an Artifact: Varis intended to forge a powerful artifact—an object infused with his will—that could absorb and channel the energy of both the ley lines and the Ember fragment. This artifact would act as a magical battery, storing the combined forces and amplifying them for his exclusive use.
  • Dominate the Ley Lines: By draining a portion of the ley lines’ energy into his vessel, Varis believed he could harness the magical stability of Vravana, achieving supreme power that could permanently destroy the Balance and cripple their enchanted defenses.

To his faction of loyal followers, Varis presented his plan as a bold move for freedom. But deep down, his motives were darker: he craved ultimate power, unbound by the Order’s collective or the Balance’s ideals of justice.

Varis and his followers worked in secret, building their ritual site at a ley line convergence deep within Troll Country, close to the Ember’s crater. They anchored their magic with a stolen Ember fragment, embedding it into a specially crafted magical reliquary.

The reliquary, forged from rare metals and infused with sigils of chaos, was designed to draw energy from both the Ember and the ley lines, funneling it into an artifact known only as the Voidkeeper.

The Voidkeeper, as Varis Duskcaller named his creation, was a relic of unmatched ambition. Forged in secrecy by Varis and his faction, it was designed to be a vessel for raw, unbridled power—a tool to dominate the ley lines and the Ember fragment alike. The Voidkeeper was a masterpiece of chaotic design, its obsidian surface etched with shifting runes that seemed to devour light. A pulsing, faintly glowing core sat at its center, housing the Ember fragment, and the entire construct hummed with latent energy, like a predator waiting to strike.

Varis had envisioned the Voidkeeper as a key to ultimate power, an artifact bound to his will that would make him the most feared and untouchable figure in Vravana. But its construction was deeply flawed, driven by Varis’s hubris and impatience. The Ember fragment’s chaotic energy clashed violently with the ley lines’ ordered flow, creating an instability that Varis believed he could control.

He was wrong.

The Voidkeeper Ritual

The ritual began under the cover of a moonless night. As Varis chanted the incantations, the reliquary glowed with an eerie light, and the ley lines responded with surging waves of energy.

When the ritual began, the Voidkeeper’s core lit up, its energy pulsing in rhythm with the ley lines. For a brief, glorious moment, it seemed that Varis had succeeded. He felt the ley lines bending to his will, their power surging into the Voidkeeper and amplifying the fragment’s chaotic essence. His followers cheered as the artifact’s glow intensified, casting long shadows across the Linwood.

Then came the first crack.

A jagged fissure split across the Voidkeeper’s surface, and the runes etched into its shell began to distort, their patterns unraveling. The core flared brighter, its glow shifting erratically as the artifact began to hum with a pitch that rose higher and higher. The ley lines pulsed violently, and the air around the ritual site grew dense with pressure.

Varis screamed at his followers to stabilize the artifact, but it was too late. The Voidkeeper, unable to contain the chaotic energy it had absorbed, began to collapse inward. Its core shattered, releasing a massive shockwave of magic that tore through the Linwood, warping the land and leaving scars in the ley lines.

With a deafening explosion, the Voidkeeper imploded, releasing a massive shockwave of energy that tore through the Linwood. At the center of the devastation, the remnants of the artifact and the Ember fragment fused into a singular, horrifying phenomenon: a vortex of swirling shadows and brilliant light called the Voidscar.

Varis and his followers were consumed by the vortex. Their bodies disintegrated, their essence bound to the chaos they had unleashed. They became wraithlike echoes, haunting the area around the Voidscar as twisted specters, their whispers warning others away from the site of the ritual.

The Voidscar

The Voidscar is not an artifact in the traditional sense but a magical anomaly—a rift created by the catastrophic fusion of the ley lines and the Ember fragment. It appears as a swirling vortex of shadow and light, suspended in the air like a jagged tear in reality. The Voidscar is a source of immense, uncontrollable power, radiating chaotic energy that corrupts everything around it.

Characteristics of the Voidscar:

  1. Unstable Energy: The Voidscar constantly emits waves of chaotic magic, destabilizing the ley lines and creating unpredictable magical phenomena.
  2. Temporal and Spatial Distortion: Time flows irregularly near the Voidscar. Travelers report losing hours in seconds or reliving moments from their past. The terrain shifts, making the Linwood treacherous and alien.
  3. Corruption: The Voidscar’s energy taints the surrounding land, twisting plants, animals, and even the ley lines themselves into grotesque, unstable forms.

The Voidscar became the focal point of the corrupted ley lines, spreading chaos across Vravana.

It began subtly, almost imperceptibly. The ley lines, once a steady and harmonious hum beneath the surface of Vravana, began to shift. Their energy, previously balanced and life-sustaining, grew erratic.

For those attuned to the ley lines—the mages of the Adherence of the Artifact, the clerics of the Balance of the Blade, and the magical rogues of the Order of Shadow—the change was unsettling. Spells misfired, enchanted tools faltered, and magical creatures displayed strange and unpredictable behaviors.

In the heart of the Linwood, where the ley lines were strongest, the first signs of corruption appeared. The ground darkened, and plants twisted into grotesque shapes, their leaves withering into jagged blackened shards. Pools of energy bubbled to the surface, emitting an acrid stench and a low, discordant hum that made the air itself feel heavy. Travelers through the Linwood began to vanish, and those who returned spoke of shadowy figures and disembodied whispers.

The corruption spread outward throughout the land until the problem became unmistakable.
